What a useful review looks like.

A fictional example of a vacancy-specific assessment for an IMG doctor applying for an NHS trust-grade SHO post.

Fictional illustration. This candidate, vacancy, criteria and application extracts are invented. This is not a customer testimonial, employer score or prediction of shortlisting. Paid Application Reviews assess the complete unsubmitted TRAC PDF, including the statement and other completed fields. This example shows selected checks. The length of the paid PDF review depends on the application and the feedback needed; there is no fixed page limit or cap on recommendations.

The source material

Invented role: Trust-grade SHO. The person specification requires GMC registration with a licence to practise, 12 months of post-registration acute clinical experience, evidence of teamwork and participation in clinical audit. NHS employment experience is desirable.

Statement extracts: [1] “I hold full GMC registration with a licence to practise.” [2] “I completed 18 months as a post-registration medical officer in an acute admissions unit overseas, assessing admissions with senior supervision and escalating concerns.” [3] “I am an excellent team player and communicator.” [4] “I helped with an antibiotic audit.” [5] “I observed NHS ward rounds during a four-week clinical attachment. I have not held an NHS employed post.”

What is already working

Extracts 1 and 2 clearly address the registration and duration-of-experience requirements as written. The description of supervision and escalation helps explain the scope of the overseas role. Extract 5 accurately distinguishes observation from employed NHS experience. These are assessments of the supplied wording, not independent verification.

Criteria coverage

CriterionEvidenceFinding
GMC registration and licence — essentialExtract 1Clearly stated; registration not independently verified.
12 months acute experience — essentialExtract 218 months and relevant setting stated. Exact dates would make the duration easier to check.
Teamwork — essentialExtract 3Claim present; supporting example missing.
Audit participation — essentialExtract 4Participation mentioned; contribution and learning unclear.
NHS employment — desirableExtract 5Experience gap acknowledged. An observational attachment does not establish employed NHS experience.

Structure and evidence

Put the essential criteria in an easy-to-follow order. Retain the clear registration and acute-experience evidence, then replace general claims with specific examples. Give the attachment its own short paragraph so it is not confused with employment.

Your five priorities

  1. Evidence teamwork: expand extract 3 with one real situation, your own action with colleagues and what followed. The experience may exist, but the supplied statement does not show it.
  2. Explain the audit contribution: clarify what you personally did in extract 4, the standard assessed and any learning or action you can substantiate. Do not imply leadership or a completed cycle unless accurate.
  3. Make the timeline checkable: add the actual dates of the acute role supporting extract 2. This improves the presentation of existing evidence.
  4. Keep the NHS experience gap explicit: describe what you learned during observation without presenting it as employed clinical work. Editing cannot create the desirable experience you do not have.
  5. Reduce generic opening claims: use the available words to connect your genuine evidence to this vacancy, retaining relevant supervision and escalation detail.

Assessment boundary: the statement can be clearer and better evidenced. We cannot infer the employer’s scores, verify the candidate’s history or predict an interview outcome.
